At this year’s NIC Conference organised by NUS Medicine International Council, Dr Kamarjit Singh Mangat, Senior Consultant at the Division of Interventional Radiology, Department of Diagnostic Imaging, National University Hospital, delivered a compelling presentation on the urgent need for innovation in liver biopsy techniques.

In his presentation, Dr Mangat highlighted the alarming rise of liver parenchymal disease - now affecting 30% of the global population and projected to reach 50% by 2050. Despite this growing clinical burden, he noted that conventional liver biopsy techniques have remained largely unchanged for the past 50 years, continuing to pose procedural risks and facing limited acceptance from both referring clinicians and patients alike.

Dr Mangat and his team at iRnovate Pte Ltd are pioneering a transformative approach to liver biopsy designed to address these longstanding challenges. His presentation offered a glimpse into a novel device known as VABS™, which aims to improve procedural safety, diagnostic precision and overall patient experience. The device is currently advancing toward its first-in-human trial and commercialisation, with an anticipated launch in 2026.

The session was moderated by Mr Jagjit Singh Matharu, Managing Director of Lighthouse Canton, who facilitated the discussion on how VABS™ could reshape the future of liver disease diagnostics.

NIC continues to serve as a key platform for clinicians, researchers and industry leaders to exchange insights and accelerate impactful medical advancements. Dr Mangat’s presentation underscored the conference’s mission in supporting and showcasing solutions that advance medical science and address pressing global health needs.
